Spectators tossed beer cans, flour and smoke grenades. Firecrackers popped and obscenities flew during the battle, called the “Ben Hurt Chariot Wars.”

And then, toward sundown, the grown-ups arrived. Seven police cars pulled up and told all 400 or so people they had to leave because they were trespassing on railroad property. They complied. But the contest was over anyway.

At least nine police cars responded Tuesday to reports of a woman bound in duct tape and naked in a man’s car. Nikolas Alexander Harbar, 31, later told police that he and his girlfriend, 26-year-old Stephanie Morgan Pelzner, were doing some Valentine’s Day role-playing.

Alas, no. We won’t reach Hollywood until next week. Until then, the parade of the strange and wholly untalented and pretty and somewhat talented will continue, with a few compelling back-stories tossed in to keep things interesting. I’m holding out hope (but not holding my breath) that Steven Tyler will lose interest in his handheld sound-effects toy before then. Love the guy, but watching him giggle over that gadget, it’s hard not to conclude that his rock-star lifestyle has taken its toll.

So Wednesday night, it was Portland, Ore. And we got …

Brittany Zika, a young woman who decided to pursue her dream of a singing career after she literally dreamed about dueting onstage with pop star Sara Bareilles and then made that unlikely dream come true. Stumbling on her way in, she joked that her friends called her “Tripster the Hipster” –- “Did you just fall for me?” Tyler quipped –- but then surprised everyone by singing quite prettily. Apparently it was her deliberately nerdy hat and glasses that threw the judges off, so she ripped them off in a sort of librarian-turns-sex-bomb reveal and made it safely through.

Ben Purdom, an 18-year-old Philadelphia teen who hawks cable TV and happened to have a cold and an unfortunate naivete that prevented him from realizing he was becoming “Idol” cannon fodder. Seriously, the producers treated this poor kid shamefully, focusing the camera on an unsightly nose-blow and showing him belch loudly when he didn’t realize he was on camera. Uncouth or not, the kid was earnest and well-meaning, and focusing on his worst moments really felt like a cheap shot, almost bully-ish. Not nice, guys.

Jermaine Jones, a 6-foot-8-and-a-half-inch church singer with a deep soulful voice and a close relationship with his momma. He declares, “It’s my time. It’s my turn,” before wowing the judges with his rendition of “Superstar” by Luther Vandross. Jones was nervous, sweating profusely, but Tyler told him he “heard the song through your nerves,” calling Jones’ voice “really spiritual.” We’ll see Jones in Hollywood.

Britnee Kellogg, a single mother of two little boys who’s a dead ringer for Britney Spears and had the strongest voice of the Portland auditions and perhaps one of the best in the competition so far. She talked about getting ditched by her boys’ dad, a basketball player who played more than basketball, and resurrecting her neglected dreams, then amused and impressed the judges by singing “You’re No Good.” After her audition, she asked Jennifer Lopez about balancing motherhood and a music career. Lopez told her she could keep her kids close and still make her dreams happen and that her kids would be “only better for it.” As Kellogg left, Tyler noted that the contestant’s mom was wearing a T-shirt that read, “My daughter’s the next American Idol.” “And by the way,” Lopez said, “she just might be.”

Police shot at a man on the rooftop of a downtown Portland parking garage Wednesday after the man himself reportedly called 9-1-1, saying he had committed a robbery and planned to jump.

The man was later found dead atop an elevator shaft by SERT officers, said Sgt. Pete Simpson. The suspect was armed, Simpson said. The man did not fire at officers, police said as the investigation continued Wednesday.

Mayor Sam Adams visited the scene and later released this statement: “There is more work to be done on the investigation into the circumstances and details of this incident, including a grand jury proceeding. As the Police Bureau does with any investigation, we will look for opportunities to learn from this incident,” Adams said.

Police noted that it is standard operating procedure to call for a grand jury investigation in these types of cases.

The first 9-1-1 call came at 3:17 a.m., Simpson said. A despondent man told dispatchers he had done a robbery and was standing atop a nine-story building, intending to jump off. The man was spotted on the top floor of the SmartPark garage at SW 4th and Morrison Avenues.

Officers started to speak with the man and called for a crisis team. At some point, two officers fired shots at the man, who then dropped out of view, Simpson said. The officers could not determine if he was alive and remained a threat.

No officers were injured.

The suspect was later spotted on top of a corner elevator shaft that also serves as a stairwell. SERT officers climbed up ladders to reach him.

The police response also included the bomb squad, which used cameras on poles and on robots to search the SmartPark garage, Simpson said.

Police cordoned off an area stretching from Alder and Morrison streets to 3rd and 4th avenues during the investigation. Streets were reopened after several hours but the garage remained closed.

The Blue and Red MAX lines were switched to bus service between the Rose Quarter, Jeld-Wen Field and Kings Hill/Salmon St. during the incident. The Green and Yellow lines were unaffected.
