Portland Timbers sign Scottish defender Steven Smith

The Portland Timbers added to their Scottish contingent on Wednesday with the signing of long-time Rangers FC defender Steven Smith. The Timbers, coached by Glasgow native John Spencer and anchored up front by former Rangers striker Kris Boyd, announced that Smith would be available to play once the club finalizes his transfer paperwork. Portland (2-4-1) visits the Montreal Impact on Saturday afternoon.
Smith, 26, spent eight years at Rangers and was a contributor to the side that won the Scottish Premier League title in 2010. He also has played in two UEFA Champions League games.
Fans salute Rams as they head west for NCAA

Among the Ram fans lined up outside the Siegel Center on Tuesday to see off the NCAA tournament-bound basketball team was an extra-small fan: the 6-month-old son of last year’s star Joey Rodriguez.
After finishing practice, the Virginia Commonwealth University men’s basketball team walked a pathway lined with gold-and-black-outfitted fans, giving them high-fives as the fans cheered, flew banners and waved pompoms.
