Jazz tune up for playoffs

The Utah Jazz tune up for the playoffs Thursday night, when they finish the regular-season against Portland at EnergySolutions Arena. The game starts at 6 p.m. and will be aired on Root Sports. The Jazz have won four straight, including a 100-88 victory over Phoenix that clinched a berth in the Western Conference playoffs.

Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin plans to limit the minutes of his prime-time players, although he won’t rest them completely. Asked what he wanted to accomplish against the Trail Blazers, Corbin said.

Portland Timbers sign Scottish defender Steven Smith

The Portland Timbers added to their Scottish contingent on Wednesday with the signing of long-time Rangers FC defender Steven Smith. The Timbers, coached by Glasgow native John Spencer and anchored up front by former Rangers striker Kris Boyd, announced that Smith would be available to play once the club finalizes his transfer paperwork. Portland (2-4-1) visits the Montreal Impact on Saturday afternoon.

Smith, 26, spent eight years at Rangers and was a contributor to the side that won the Scottish Premier League title in 2010. He also has played in two UEFA Champions League games.

A high-tech worker who stripped naked at Portland International Airport as a protest against airport security screeners said Wednesday he was being “nude but not lewd,” and characterized his act of defiance as protected political speech.

John E. Brennan, 49, of Portland was charged with disorderly conduct and indecent exposure after taking off far more than this belt and shoes during the screening process before a Tuesday evening flight to San Jose, California. The incident report from the Port of Portland, which operates the airport, said some passengers covered their eyes and the eyes of their children. Others laughed and took photos.

City plan looks to give east Portland an economic boost

Six Portland neighborhoods that are struggling to keep businesses from closing and to keep crime low are in line to get a million-dollar assist from the city.

The six neighborhoods are all east of downtown. They are Northeast 42nd Avenue north of Prescott; the neighborhoods of Cully, Parkrose, Division-Midway near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast 82nd and Division.

Portland mayor seeks ban on replica guns

Portland Mayor Sam Adams says the city needs an ordinance like one in Beaverton that bans the display of replica hand guns — toy or pellet guns that look like high-caliber weapons.

Adams says a ban could prevent some police shootings. Officers have shot two people this year in Portland who held realistic-looking guns. Adams says the ordinance could be a warning to parents that their children shouldn’t be walking around in public with replicas.

Woman arrested for 2010 gang shooting

A 26-year-old woman was arrested this week in connection with the 2010 gang shooting of a 16-year-old in Northeast Portland. Shantae Bell was charged with attempted murder for the October 2010 shooting of 16-year-old Antonio Leron Cabine, who was wounded in the legs.

The shooting was one of a rash of retaliation shootings surrounding the murder of Andre Payton in September of 2010.

Missing Portland man found dead near La Pine

Search and rescue crews looking for a missing Southwest Portland man found his body Tuesday night. Police said 61-year-old Samuel Coleman, of Portland, died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

His family reported him missing Monday, after he failed to return home from what they called a “possible” cross-country ski trip.
